I used to act in improv shows in beautiful Austin, Texas.
Founders are a lot like improv comedians.
We constantly run into situations we couldn't have predicted 5 minutes before.
We don’t need to entertain the audience with humor or other strong emotions to move the scene forward, but we do need to make hundreds of good decisions to move the company forward.
In improv, the magic starts with “Yes, and…”
This is the first lesson we learn in improv.
I was recently reminded of this concept in one of Seth Godin’s books, The Practice.
“Yes, and…” is an invitation to test your ideas.
Some work. Some don't.
So when a challenge pops up, or a new opportunity comes,
Don’t say “No.”
Say “Yes, and”... and surprise yourself.
See where it takes you.
What are some non-obvious ways improv/acting is similar and different to entrepreneurship/business?
